Details
The FBI test protocol is used to assess how effectively a cartridge performs for self-defense. This 38 Special +P ammunition by Speer was specifically developed to satisfy the parameters of the FBI test protocol in full.
This round’s 125 grain projectile is no ordinary jacketed hollow point. It is the Gold Dot: a JHP with a fully bonded jacket and precision-formed nose cavity, which is why it penetrates barriers so effectively and proceeds to unleash rapid yet uniform terminal expansion. If you were to fire the bullet out of a 4” vented barrel into a block of ballistic gel (which has approximately the same density as a swine’s muscle tissue) that is covered by four layers of fabric (T-shirt, cotton shirt, fleece and denim) from a distance of 10’, the bullet would penetrate to a depth of around 11” and expand to a diameter of about 0.58”.
This ammo’s nickel-plated brass cases protect it against corrosion in addition to reducing friction that could have slowed down extraction from a revolver’s cylinder. It’s law enforcement grade ammo that any civilian can buy, but take note that it is overpressure: it must not be fired in a 38 Special firearm that isn’t rated +P (any 357 Mag firearm is designed to handle this ammo without issue).
