Details

The .22-250 Remington began as a wildcat cartridge in the 1930s before becoming commercially available in the 1960's when Browning began making rifles in that caliber. It is a very popular varmint round, especially in the western US, because it is capable of dealing with high cross winds due to its high velocity. While similar to the .220 Swift, the .22-250 can be custom loaded to higher pressures: this is often referred to the steep angle of the shoulder of the case keeping the burning powder out of the neck. The 55 grain soft point boat tail bullet reaches a muzzle velocity of 3680 feet per second with 1654 foot pounds of energy. This round is ideally suited for long range varmint hunting where the soft point helps expand to create wider wound channels along with the hydrostatic shock such high velocity rounds are reputed to help inflict.
