The 6.8mm Special Purpose Caliber was designed to bridge the gap between the 5.56mm and 7.62mm NATO rounds while retaining the basic platform of the US service M16/M4 series of rifles. As combat engagement ranges increased past 2-300 yards to twice that and beyond in Afghanistan, the 5.56 NATO round was found to have some deficiencies. From 2002-2004 the 6.8 SPC cartridge was put through special and field trials. While providing ballistic energies that were within the limits sought, the cost of replacing parts on the standard AR15/M4 style of firearms was considered too high to justify the conversion on a wide scale of all US military forces. The polymer tipped 110 grain bullet has a muzzle velocity of 2549 feet per second while having 1587 foot pounds of energy. It is ideal for range training and even deer hunting with the AR platform.
