In 1952, Winchester introduced their short cased .30 caliber rifle round: the .308. Development towards this cartridge began shortly after World War I when the full sized .30-06 Springfield rifle cartridge was found to be problematic for semi and automatic use. Firearm manufacturers Browning and Garand kept the larger round in service through the next four decades. Never the less, Winchester continued work on the short action .30 caliber round in the meantime. Two years after its introduction NATO adopted for its standardized rifle round the 7.62x51 which is physically identical to Winchester's .308. While the latter is loaded to slightly higher pressures, both rounds can be fired in either calibers' chambers.
