5.7x28 Ammo
5.7x28 Ammo - General Details & History
FN Herstal developed the 5.7x28mm cartridge for the P90 personal defense weapon as well as the FN Five-seven pistol. This cartridge debuted in 1991 and has a relatively small but dedicated following among gun owners who appreciate its low recoil and excellent accuracy. Weapons firing 5.7x28mm ammunition are used by dozens of countries and police agencies, notably the US Secret Service.
Although military 5.7x28mm ammo is designed to penetrate body armor, the ammo available to most gun owners falls into two categories: full metal jacket rounds for target shooting and jacketed hollow points for self-defense against unarmored attackers.
A typical 5.7x28mm load fires a light 30 grain bullet at a high muzzle velocity of about 2,350 feet per second. Target ammo can be had from both FN and Federal's American Eagle series; there is also an FN load firing Hornady V-MAX bullets for defensive use.
