Details
What do we call 1,000 rounds of military grade 223 Rem ammunition in the prepping community? “A good start.” But even if you unleash this entire bulk pack of ammo during your next range day, you won’t be disappointed by the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant’s efforts.
Winchester, which operates Lake City on behalf of the United States government, designed this cartridge to deliver fundamentally identical performance to that of the standard 5.56 M193 load. That means the round’s 55 grain full metal jacket achieves a muzzle velocity of approximately 3,240 fps in conjunction with a 20” barrel. The FMJ possesses the lead core and gilding metal jacket which make it completely nonmagnetic. Its mid-body cannelure keeps the bullet firmly seated in the case mouth until it’s ready to tear through the barrel.
What about those cases? Are they discolored because they are reloaded? No sir! They are gray because they were tempered for added protection against splitting during ignition. All 223 cases are annealed in that fashion – military grade ones simply aren’t polished up afterward. Once you’ve plucked out this ammo’s spent noncorrosive Boxer primers, its cases become great for handloading.
