The .30-06 Springfield was born of the US .30 Army – the .30-03 Springfield – case with the adoption of the German designed “spitzer”, or pointed bullet. This makes all the old .30-03 chambers capable of firing the aerodynamically superior ’06 and provides superior performance over longer range. The .30-06 served in the US military for almost half a century and is still regarded as one of the best performing rifle rounds ever in service.
