Hornady Critical Defense … Lite. It’s low-recoil 9mm self-defense ammunition: clearly intended to be marketed to women, but truly suitable for anyone who would like to cope with as little muzzle rise as possible while they’re defending their precious life.

This round’s low-recoil performance is the product of two variables. First is its bullet weight: 100 grains, which is substantially lighter than normal. Second is its muzzle velocity: 1,125 fps (4” barrel), which wouldn’t be abnormally slow for a 124 grain load. Granted, this round’s striking energy is relatively low: 224 ft lbs at 50 yards. But with one correctly placed shot, you could instantly neutralize a threat with much less power than even that.

This round’s bullet is Hornady’s own FTX. The pink polymer plug sitting in the FTX’s nose cavity isn’t a cosmetic feature. It prevents the jacketed hollow point bullet’s nose cavity from congesting with fabric or other debris, and also compresses during penetration to promote reliably uniform terminal expansion.

This reloadable brass-cased ammo is filled with low-flash powder. If you ever have to fire in the dark, then you will appreciate how a duller muzzle flash helps keep your eyesight acclimated to your surroundings.
