Details
Asking us to pick our favorite 45 ACP self-defense cartridge would be like asking a mother to pick her favorite child. Wait – it’s actually not like that at all. Picking our favorite is easy, and doing it won’t increase our risk of winding up in a nursing home.
This is our favorite: Federal Premium Tactical HST. To be certain, this ammo is indeed available to the general public. The only difference is the packaging, as this LE ammo comes in 50-round boxes instead of boxes 20.
The HST projectile is an exceptional jacketed hollow point, with the capacity for effective penetration and expansion under a broad range of circumstances. When it is assessed according to the FBI test protocol, the 230 grain jacketed hollow point strikes a block of ballistic gelatin that is shielded by four layers of clothing at a velocity of 871 fps (Federal records the round’s muzzle velocity with a 5” test barrel). The bullet only loses 1 grain of its weight before it comes to a rest at a depth of 13.5”. It also expands in diameter by 92%, taking on the form of a six-pointed star as it does so. The HST bullet will also lose 1 grain of its weight or less if it has to pass through plywood, drywall or sheet metal!
The tough and clog-resistant HST projectile is designed to feed smoothly in any firearm. Its low-friction nickel-plated brass case does even more to secure seamless functionality, and it is reloadable (Federal loads this ammo with #150 large pistol primers). Made in Minnesota!
