While it has become the basis of the 5.56mm NATO, it has not really been abandoned for use as a varmint and small to medium sized game hunting round. Capable of being safely fired from both the NATO and .223 Wylde chambers in addition to its own, the cartridge’s versatility also makes it a popular choice for stock piling towards both sporting and civil defense. The 40 grain V-Max style bullet from Black Hills has a muzzle velocity of 3600 feet per second with 1151 foot pounds of energy. This is a premium hunting cartridge that is nevertheless no slouch if applied to civil defense.
